The Soldier on the Pier, 2002

Brian’s final collection in his lifetime, published just a few weeks before his death in May 2002.

Commenting on the poem which opens this book, the poet and critic John Lucas notes that ‘its modest, anti-heroic stoicism gleams with moral sense’. In subject matter, the poems encompass a wide span of historical time: the Garden of Eden, early cave paintings, Crecy, the Somme and the modern world. Throughout, Brian’s love of music and church architecture and his feeling for the natural world shine out.
